CoreSite operates colocation data centers in major United States markets, and its buildings are known as places where networks and clouds meet. It is an American Tower company.

The draw is interconnection as much as floor space. Its 2022 corporate overview counts 28 data centers in 10 markets, reaching more than 435 network service providers and more than 325 cloud and IT service providers. A company that puts its equipment in one of those buildings can connect to carriers, to the public clouds and to other tenants with a cable run inside the building instead of a circuit across town.

Best for

  • Businesses running a mix of their own hardware and public cloud that want both under one roof, with private connections between them.
  • Financial firms that need low latency and tightly secured space. CoreSite points to its Chicago building beside the Board of Trade.
  • Media, entertainment and gaming companies whose delivery depends on hundreds of networks and content delivery networks being close at hand.
  • Software companies that must hold latency and reliability steady as their customer base grows.
  • Healthcare organizations that need a hosting environment suited to HIPAA and better connections to AWS and Microsoft.
  • Government agencies that need a facility supporting FedRAMP and FISMA deployments.
  • Teams running AI workloads that need high power density and fast links to their training data.

CoreSite sells space, power and connections. If you want someone to manage your servers or run your cloud for you, that is a different company's job. See Cloud and IaaS.

What they offer

Colocation. Deployments from a single cabinet up to a private suite or a build to order, with up to 30 kW per cabinet in most markets for dense equipment. The 10 markets named in the 2022 overview are Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Northern Virginia, Orlando and Silicon Valley.

Cloud and IaaS on-ramps. The Open Cloud Exchange, which CoreSite launched in 2013, turns one physical port into several private virtual connections to cloud providers and other destinations, set up in software. Native on-ramps include AWS Direct Connect and Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute.

Markets with a particular role. The Los Angeles campus, anchored at One Wilshire, is a landing point for subsea cables to Asia and the Pacific. Boston reaches Europe by subsea cable. Miami reaches South America, and one of its buildings is built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. Northern Virginia is the largest campus in the documents, at more than 1.3 million square feet.

Proof

CoreSite's 2022 overview states a 100 percent uptime service level agreement. Depending on the campus, it represents its facilities as meeting ISO 27001, PCI DSS, SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, NIST 800-53 and HIPAA.

One published case study withholds the customer's name. A credit union with close to 90,000 members in the Washington, D.C. area had reliability problems with its previous data center provider that threatened its online banking. It set up a point of presence in a CoreSite facility in the region to protect the services its members use.

These figures and accounts are CoreSite's own.

Good to know

  • The certifications are not identical from one market to the next. Ask for the list that applies to the building you would use.
  • The same goes for the uptime commitment. The Orlando brochure states 99.99 percent for that campus, while the corporate overview states 100 percent.
  • Moving your equipment in is delivered with a partner, JK Technology Services. Backup and disaster recovery services are delivered with another partner, STN.
  • Renewable energy certificates are an opt-in extra and are not part of a standard colocation contract.
  • Illinois and Virginia have sales tax exemption programs for data center equipment that may apply to customers in CoreSite's Chicago and Northern Virginia buildings. Ask whether you qualify.
  • The footprint has grown since 2022, and a third Denver building is planned. Ask for the current list of buildings in your market.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
