Equinix runs interconnected data centers around the world where companies place their own equipment and connect privately to clouds and networks. It calls itself the world's digital infrastructure company.
The point of an Equinix building is who else is in it. Carriers, cloud on-ramps and partners sit in the same facility, so a connection to them runs across the building instead of across the public internet. Its 2022 metrics report counts more than 240 data centers in 71 metros, over 435,000 physical and virtual interconnections and more than 10,000 customers. Its 2024 fact sheet counts more than 260 data centers, over 33 million square feet and about 3,000 cloud and IT service partners, and says its ecosystem includes 60 percent of the Fortune 500.
Best for
- Companies that want their own servers in a carrier-neutral building close to many networks and cloud on-ramps.
- Enterprises running workloads across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud that want traffic routed privately between the clouds.
- Organizations that need a dedicated connection into a named cloud from inside the data center rather than over the open internet.
- Teams that want dedicated single-tenant servers in minutes without buying hardware.
- Businesses replacing hardware routers and firewalls at the network edge with virtual devices deployed from a portal.
What they offer
Colocation. International Business Exchange data centers, its IBX brand: cages, cabinets and cross-connects in owned or leased buildings. Its July 2023 directory lists each building by metro with its address, whether it is owned or leased, and its colocation space. A separate xScale line serves hyperscale cloud and content customers, built in part through joint ventures.
Cloud and IaaS. Equinix Metal, dedicated physical servers provisioned on demand, which Equinix says are ready in minutes rather than months, with no forced virtualization. Equinix Fabric, software-defined interconnection that sets up private point-to-point and multipoint connections between clouds, networks and partners. Fabric Cloud Router, a virtual router that privately routes traffic between AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and your own sites, with bandwidth from 10 megabits to 10 gigabits per second. Network Edge, virtual routers, firewalls and SD-WAN gateways from makers including Cisco, Fortinet, Juniper and Palo Alto Networks, deployed from a portal with your own license or an Equinix subscription. Direct on-ramps into AWS, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud from inside its facilities.
Equinix also runs an internet exchange for peering and a time synchronization service on the same Fabric ports.

Proof
- Equinix's 2022 report states reliability above 99.9999 percent across its data center operations for calendar 2021.
- Equinix Fabric carries an availability commitment of 99.999 percent on dual ports and 99.9 percent on a single port, and is certified to MEF 3.0. Equinix says it was the first carrier-neutral software-defined interconnection provider with a MEF-certified 10 gigabit service.
- Its 2024 fact sheet reports 96 percent progress toward its goal of 100 percent renewable energy.
- Equinix offers its own solutions architects and validation centers to help design a deployment.
These are Equinix's own statements. Its customer stories all name the customer, so none is used here.
Good to know
- Its counts are defined broadly. Footprint figures include metros where an Equinix partner, not Equinix, has the building, and interconnection totals leave out some acquired companies. Ask what applies in your metro.
- Not every building is Equinix-owned. The directory marks each as owned or leased, and in the same metro some are one and some the other.
- The cloud on-ramp maps here are from 2019 and 2020 and likely understate today's footprint. Ask for current availability at your metro before planning a private cloud connection.
- Equinix provides the building, the power and the connections. Running what you place there is your job or a partner's.
- The documents run from 2019 to 2024, and the largest scale figures come from different years, so compare like with like.

How buying works
The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.
Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.
- 01
Build your quote list
Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.
- 02
We bring back real options
A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.
- 03
We handle the order and install
Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.
- 04
We stay on your account
Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
