Netrality

Available through IT Raven

  • Data Center and Colocation

Netrality owns and operates data centers in the middle of American cities, in the buildings where networks meet each other. It sells space and power in those buildings, plus the connections available inside them.

The value of a building like this is who else is in it. Each site is built around a carrier-neutral meet-me room, a shared space where tenants connect directly to carriers, cloud providers and one another. Across the nine buildings its specification sheet tabulates, Netrality counts 469 on-net providers, 297 networks that peer and 20 peering exchanges.

Netrality calls itself the largest privately held company in the United States that both owns and runs interconnection buildings of this kind, with Macquarie Asset Management as its long-term investor. Ownership matters to a tenant, because an operator that rents its building depends on a lease it does not control.

Best for

  • Businesses whose product depends on low delay to users in a specific city: trading platforms, media rendering and streaming, online gaming.
  • Carriers, cloud platforms, content networks and managed service providers that want to reach many networks through one room.
  • Healthcare and manufacturing teams with workloads that must sit close to the hospital or the plant.
  • Companies that want a disaster recovery site in a second city without building one.
  • Regulated operators that need AWS infrastructure physically inside a particular state or market.
  • Buyers with dense computing who need high power per cabinet, which the Kansas City Metro site at 7801 Nieman is built for.

What they offer

Colocation. Cabinets, cages, pods, private suites and full data halls, with the mix varying by building. Cages built for HIPAA and PCI requirements are available at every tabulated site. Netrality also names two larger formats, powered shell and wholesale, without describing them in the documents available here.

Inside the buildings, tenants can add:

  • Cloud on-ramps. Direct connections into AWS and Google Cloud, and to exchange platforms such as Megaport and PacketFabric. The list differs by building.
  • NetConnect IP transit. Internet bandwidth blended from several upstream carriers, with DDoS attack detection.
  • Peering. Access to local internet exchanges in its markets.
  • AWS Outposts hosting. Netrality supplies the space, power and connections for AWS's own on-site hardware. AWS still delivers, installs and maintains that hardware.
  • Remote hands. On-site technicians who work on your equipment at your request.

The buildings are in Chicago, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Philadelphia and St. Louis.

Proof

  • Netrality's literature puts the portfolio at 18 properties, 3.3 million square feet and more than 100 megawatts of power, spread over six markets in North America.
  • Its building comparison marks a SOC 2 Type 2 audit at all nine tabulated buildings.
  • It reports that in 2022 its facilities recorded 100 percent uptime. That is a past result. The documents available here state no uptime commitment for a contract.
  • Its sustainability roadmap reports the whole portfolio running on renewable energy sources, and the Houston building has held LEED certification since 2014.

These figures are Netrality's own. No anonymized customer story was available for this page.

Good to know

  • The company overview counts 18 properties, and the specification sheet details nine buildings. Ask which building you would be in and get that building's sheet.
  • Cloud on-ramps are building specific. Google Cloud Interconnect, for example, is listed at two sites, and at the Philadelphia building it is reached through the riser.
  • Only Netrality staff, or customers escorted by them, may enter the meet-me room. Plan for that when you schedule connection work.
  • Netrality states a standard cabinet can be powered in one to three days, and a cage in seven to fourteen, depending on its power needs.
  • Every property can host a customer antenna or dish on the roof, after a site consultation.
  • Buying renewable energy credits for your own usage is an option, subject to availability.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
