RapidScale is a managed cloud provider that runs its own VMware private cloud and also manages customers' environments on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. It is a Cox Business company, so it sits inside a larger telecom and IT group.
Its pitch is that most businesses end up on more than one cloud and need one team that can assess, migrate and then run all of them. Support is the part it emphasizes most. Its RapidResponse team is staffed by its own engineers, all based in the United States, and it supports your end users directly instead of only your IT department.
Best for
- Companies on VMware that are working through Broadcom's licensing changes, and want either to keep running VMware with a provider Broadcom kept in its partner program or to use the moment to move.
- Healthcare organizations, including life sciences, payers and health technology firms, that need an AWS or Azure environment built to HIPAA and HITRUST requirements.
- Banks, insurers, asset managers and financial technology firms that need a PCI DSS or SOC 2 aligned cloud with someone operating it around the clock.
- Small and midsize businesses that want to use AI and machine learning and have no data science team of their own.
- Regulated or security-minded organizations that need virtual desktops for a hybrid workforce.
- Teams with a hard deadline and little in-house cloud experience.
What they offer
Cloud and IaaS. Managed operations on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, delivered in three stages: assess, design and build, then migrate and run. A Migration Readiness Assessment, built on the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework, takes about half a day. A FinOps team works on keeping the cloud bill under control on an ongoing basis. On the private side RapidScale runs a VMware cloud in Tier 3 data centers and helps VMware customers through the licensing transition.
Backup and Disaster Recovery. Managed backup built on Veeam, with data encrypted before it leaves your site and again in transit, and managed disaster recovery built on Zerto.
Desktop as a Service. Virtual desktops and applications on Citrix DaaS and Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop, in private, public or hybrid form depending on what your compliance and data rules require.
Managed Security. Managed detection and response, log monitoring and automated response, vulnerability management, and for AWS customers an annual compliance assessment with ongoing data loss monitoring. Its portfolio material also lists SASE and SD-WAN, though the documents say little about them.
AI and machine learning. A workshop that pairs a solutions specialist with a certified cloud architect, and behind it a practice that assesses your data, builds the pipelines, prototypes and then tunes the models.

Proof
A March 2024 overview reports a customer satisfaction score of 4.83 out of 5, more than 2,000 managed cloud customers, more than 1,000 public cloud migrations and over 200 certified staff. RapidScale says Broadcom invited it to continue as a Premier Partner in its restructured VMware partner program. A 2020 document lists its certifications as HIPAA, HITRUST CSF, ISO 27001, SOC 1, SOC 2 and PCI DSS Level 1.
Its published case studies withhold the customers' names.
A government-affiliated research organization. It needed a FedRAMP-compliant analytics environment in production in under 60 days, faster than its own procurement could move, with staff who had no AWS experience.
A health insurance claims processor. A long-time private cloud customer, it needed a public cloud version of its platform for a new client within three months while pursuing HITRUST certification.
A mortgage software company. It moved its platform from Heroku to AWS for tighter security aligned to PCI DSS and better deployment automation.
A security software company whose product is used by more than a hundred Fortune 500 firms. It had run on RapidScale's private cloud since 2007 and moved its main product to Azure with RapidScale.

Good to know
- Managed AWS comes in three cumulative tiers called Essential, Premium and Complete. Work outside the included list is handled as a change request or a separate project, so read the list.
- Published response targets for phone-reported incidents start at under 15 minutes for a critical issue.
- For healthcare engagements, RapidScale's stated scope leaves out connected devices and mainframe workloads.
- Headline figures vary with the age of the document. Older material cites different tenure and staff counts than the 2024 overview, so ask for current numbers.
