Data Canopy is a hybrid infrastructure provider that puts colocation, private cloud, cloud links and disaster recovery under one contract. One invoice covers all of it. It was founded in 2009 and describes its work as connecting, storing and securing a client's physical and virtual infrastructure.

It calls itself vendor agnostic, meaning it builds each environment from whatever mix of colocation, private cloud and public cloud the client's requirements call for. Its footprint combines data centers it runs with data centers run by other operators, across North America, Europe and Asia. A government arm, Data Canopy Government, serves federal work.

Best for

  • Companies that want to replace several infrastructure vendors and contracts with one relationship.
  • Regulated organizations, in particular financial services and healthcare, that need a compliant mix of colocation, private cloud and public cloud.
  • IT teams reconsidering their VMware footprint after Broadcom's licensing changes, since Data Canopy offers a managed path to Nutanix.
  • Buyers who want dedicated hardware without buying it as capital equipment.
  • Federal agencies and the contractors serving them, where a large provider could not meet the customization and budget required.
  • Managed service providers that need a data center and cloud partner behind their own clients.

What they offer

Colocation. Racks, cabinets and cages in facilities Data Canopy describes as Tier III enhanced, with more than 170 carriers on net. A compliance matrix lists the attestations held at each of its named United States sites.

Cloud and IaaS. Private cloud, direct connections into AWS and Microsoft Azure, and hybrid designs that mix them. Hardware as a Service provides custom dedicated servers paid for monthly with management included. It also runs a structured migration from VMware to Nutanix, from discovery and planning through cutover.

Business Connectivity. Canopy Connect is a hub that reaches hundreds of cloud and network providers through Megaport and PacketFabric, by VPN, through your own carrier or over a physical connection. Direct links into AWS Direct Connect and Azure ExpressRoute are available.

Backup and Disaster Recovery. Geographic redundancy across its data centers, encrypted server backups and failover to a second environment, preceded by an assessment that sets your recovery targets.

The catalog also lists Data Canopy under Desktop as a Service. The documents available for this page do not describe that offering, so ask for detail.

Proof

Data Canopy's one-page overview states 99.999 percent uptime guaranteed for hosting in its facilities.

Its published case studies withhold the customers' names.

A large financial services provider in the Washington, D.C. area. Data Canopy replaced aging equipment and an improvised network with a virtualized environment in a Tier III facility, and built a disaster recovery environment more than 1,200 miles away.

A real estate investment firm. Its previous data center provider had suffered a data breach and left it down for three days. Data Canopy audited the environment and moved it to a new platform with disaster recovery in place.

A federal agency, served through a prime contractor. Data Canopy Government supplied caged space, power, cross-connects, bandwidth and access-controlled physical security, and the agency's power requirements grew during the project.

These figures and accounts are Data Canopy's own.

Good to know

  • Not every site marketed by Data Canopy is operated by Data Canopy. Its own serviceability list names other data center operators at several locations, including overseas. Ask who runs the building you would use.
  • "Tier III enhanced" is the company's own description. The documents cite no independent tier certification, so ask for one if your auditors need it.
  • Additional power at some sites comes with a wait. The serviceability list shows capacity at one location arriving in 90 to 180 days.
  • The compliance attestations differ from site to site. Check the matrix for the specific building.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
