Digital Realty owns and operates data centers around the world and rents space, power and connections inside them. Its 2024 overview counts more than 300 data centers in more than 50 metro areas, in over 25 countries on six continents.

Its roots are in real estate. An older brochure describes a business built on acquiring, managing and expanding data center campuses, and it serves everyone from a company that needs one rack to tenants that take megawatts. What a tenant buys, beyond the space, is position: a place inside buildings where hundreds of carriers, the major clouds and thousands of other companies already are. Digital Realty packages all of this as PlatformDIGITAL, with the same products and portal in every market.

Best for

  • Enterprises that need data center space in many countries from one provider under one agreement.
  • Companies that want their data and systems placed close to the clouds and partners they exchange data with.
  • Financial firms, insurers, manufacturers, retailers and healthcare groups moving off centralized, aging infrastructure. Digital Realty publishes a design brief for each.
  • Buyers whose needs will grow from a few racks to megawatts and who do not want to change provider on the way.
  • Network-heavy businesses that want to reach many carriers in one building.

What they offer

Colocation. Cabinets up to 52 rack units, cages from 100 square feet and private suites, with power redundancy from N+1 to 2N+1. Two packaged starting points exist. Network Hub is a small cage with cabinets and cross connects for pulling network traffic together. Data Hub is a larger cage for data platforms, including one high-density cabinet.

Cloud and IaaS. What the documents describe under this heading is connection to clouds. Service Exchange gives direct, on-demand access to several cloud platforms from one port, and SX Fabric links your deployments in different cities through software. Both run on Megaport's technology. ServiceFabric is its newer layer for ordering connections on demand.

Day to day, customers work through MarketplacePORTAL to order cross connects, check space and power, and request remote hands. Its architects also offer a structured design engagement, in four steps from briefing to deployment.

Proof

  • Digital Realty states 99.999 percent uptime across its platform for the 17th consecutive year, as of the end of 2023.
  • An interconnection brochure counts more than 200,000 cross connects among more than 5,000 customers.
  • Its 2023 deck claims the most ENERGY STAR certified buildings of any data center operator, and its 2024 overview cites 1.4 gigawatts of renewable energy under contract.
  • Its industry body, Nareit, gave it the Leader in the Light award for the data center sector from 2017 through 2022.

These are Digital Realty's own statements. Its sector briefs describe customer outcomes in general terms and none gives a specific customer story.

Good to know

  • Certifications are held site by site. Its colocation brochure maps each site to a different set, and describes HIPAA and NIST alignment as a mapping from the SOC 2 report. Get the list for your building.
  • Remote hands response depends on the site. Some answer within two hours at any time, and others only during business hours.
  • A cloud connection available through software is different from a physical on-ramp in the building. The portfolio brochure tells buyers to check with the cloud provider.
  • The starter packages are fixed bundles, with anything further added as an extra.
  • Older brochures in the set describe a much smaller company. One from about 2017 lists 170 data centers. Use the recent overviews.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
