Akamai is a security and cloud company that protects websites, applications and networks from attack and runs a distributed cloud of its own. Its documents say it processes more than 1,200 terabytes of internet traffic a day and that this traffic feeds the threat intelligence behind its products.

Its security products work at different layers. Prolexic scrubs denial-of-service traffic in its own scrubbing centers before it reaches you. App & API Protector guards web applications and the programming interfaces behind them. Guardicore Segmentation maps the traffic between your servers and applications and fences them off from one another, so an intruder who gets in cannot move sideways. Around that core, Akamai now sells streamed desktops and a GPU cloud for running AI models close to users.

What they offer

Managed Security. Prolexic, a denial-of-service scrubbing service with 20 scrubbing centers, run as always-on or on-demand, with connection options that depend on whether you control a routable block of IP addresses. App & API Protector, which combines a web application firewall, bot mitigation, API protection and denial-of-service defense on an engine Akamai says tunes itself, plus optional malware scanning of uploaded files. Guardicore Segmentation, which maps application traffic down to the process level and enforces policy between workloads, with versions for AWS and an agentless option for Azure. A bot and abuse portfolio covers account takeover, scraping and checkout abuse.

Desktop as a Service. Cloud PC, a fully managed service that streams desktops, applications and browser workspaces from Akamai's cloud regions. It is powered by Workspot and includes a dedicated technical account team and support at any hour.

AI and Automation. Akamai Inference Cloud, a distributed GPU cloud on NVIDIA Blackwell hardware for running AI models in real time, which Akamai says reaches more than 1,000 locations.

Cloud and IaaS. Cloud compute plans, including GPU instances that scale from one to eight Blackwell cards per plan.

Proof

  • Prolexic is backed by more than 225 frontline responders in its security operations command centers. Akamai says it has stopped attacks peaking at 1.44 terabits and 809 million packets per second, and that in September 2023 it stopped a two-minute attack of 633.7 gigabits per second aimed at a large financial institution.
  • Prolexic's zero-second mitigation commitment covers the more than 80 percent of attacks Akamai says it stops instantly. Separate commitments cover availability, time to mitigate, time to alert and time to respond.
  • Akamai says App & API Protector's automatic tuning doubles detections and cuts false positives to a fifth.
  • It counts 9 of the top 10 software companies, 8 of the top 10 retailers, 14 of the top 20 healthcare providers and 16 of the top 20 banks as customers, without naming them.
  • Cloud PC states latency under 50 milliseconds and a 99.99 percent availability commitment. The bot and abuse platform is described as SOC 2 and PCI compliant.

A United States healthcare company. It needed zero trust controls while meeting HIPAA and SOC 2 requirements. Its network engineers deployed Guardicore Segmentation with software agents and no new hardware, and Akamai says they stopped 4,000 cyberattacks in one day.

A United Kingdom water utility. It runs plant control systems beside its IT and delivers more than 100 million liters of water a day to more than 1.6 million people. It chose Guardicore Segmentation over a hardware approach it judged slow and costly to buy and maintain, and used it to separate critical servers and restrict traffic between them.

Good to know

  • Cloud PC is delivered on Workspot's technology, and the streamed desktop documents come from a single 2026 brief. The GPU cloud documents are also from 2026. The security documents run from 2022 to 2025.
  • Prolexic's connection method depends on whether you hold a routable IPv4 /24 or IPv6 /48 block. Ask which option applies to you before comparing quotes.
  • Guardicore's Azure mode is agentless for discovery and visibility, but enforcement elsewhere in the same environment may still use agents.
  • App & API Protector applies updates automatically by default. An optional Advanced Security Management module adds a manual update mode and an evaluation mode for testing new protections first.
