Flexential is a data center company that also runs cloud, backup and security services on top of its buildings. It describes itself as a hybrid IT provider, with joint headquarters in Charlotte and Denver.

Its recent datasheets count 40 data centers in 21 markets, tied together by a private network backbone that runs at 100 gigabits per second, and 4,200 customers in the United States and Canada. The draw for a buyer is range. You can put your own equipment in its space, rent its private cloud, have it manage your AWS or Azure, and recover into the same network after a failure, under one contract.

Best for

  • Companies that want colocation and cloud from the same provider, connected on one network.
  • Regulated organizations, healthcare in particular, that need facilities and services covered by HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC and PCI DSS audits.
  • Credit unions modernizing aging core systems under examiner and card industry rules.
  • Buyers who want a data center in a regional market, close to their offices, instead of only the largest metro hubs.
  • Teams adopting containers that do not want to hire Kubernetes specialists.
  • IT and security teams that know they carry risk and do not know where to start.

What they offer

Colocation. Retail colocation for deployments up to 500 kilowatts, and high-density space from 500 kilowatts to several megawatts, with technicians on site around the clock for remote hands.

Business Connectivity. A set of interconnection products: private links between its data centers, private connections into public clouds managed from a portal, and internet bandwidth. Its network list counts more than 300 carriers on its network.

Cloud and IaaS. Hosted private cloud, dedicated or shared, with a tier that gives your team direct control of the virtualization layer. Managed public cloud for AWS and Azure. Managed containers, where Flexential runs the Kubernetes platform and your developers write the applications.

Backup and Disaster Recovery. Backup as a service, fully managed or self-managed, with no fees for moving data in or out. Disaster recovery as a service, plus planning help for companies writing or repairing a recovery plan.

Managed Security. Ongoing managed security, a quarterly Cyber Defense Program that includes an external penetration test, and a ransomware readiness assessment.

The catalog also lists Flexential under Desktop as a Service. The documents available for this page do not describe that offering. Newer sheets add AI services: a strategy workshop and ongoing operation of AI platforms.

Coverage

  • US (Nationwide)

Coverage is a starting point. We check every address before we quote it.

Proof

  • Flexential states a 100 percent uptime guarantee for its edge data centers and network.
  • It lists HIPAA, HITRUST CSF, SOC 1, SOC 2 and PCI DSS coverage for its managed container environments.
  • Its backbone is described as 100 gigabits per second, able to scale to 400.

These are Flexential's own statements. Its customer stories all name the customer, so none is used here.

Good to know

  • The counts shift between documents of different ages: 20 or 21 markets, 200 or 300 carriers on the network. Treat any single figure as a snapshot and ask for today's.
  • Two earlier company names appear in older documents. An overview credits the Flexential trademark to Peak 10, and a 2016 location guide carries the ViaWest name. Older paperwork for a site may use either.
  • Backup as a service is meant for data that can tolerate a longer recovery time. Critical systems belong on the disaster recovery service.
  • The Cyber Defense Program recurs, with new reports each quarter, so budget for it as an ongoing service.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
