Megaport is a network-as-a-service provider whose global software-defined network connects businesses to cloud platforms and data centers on demand. Instead of ordering a fixed circuit and waiting weeks, you buy a port into Megaport's network once, then spin up private connections to where you need them through a web portal or an API, in minutes rather than months. A connection can go up and come down as needs change, which is the difference from a traditional carrier circuit. Megaport does not run applications or store data itself. It is the private road between your network, the public clouds and the data centers in its ecosystem. It states more than 2,800 customers, more than 100 data center operators and more than 360 service providers reachable across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
Best for
- Companies with workloads in more than one public cloud that want private, direct links to each rather than routing sensitive traffic over the open internet.
- Businesses that need connectivity to spin up and down quickly, for a project, a migration or a proof of concept, without a long carrier contract.
- Organizations connecting several data centers and cloud regions that want one platform and one portal for every link.
- Teams that want to add virtual routing or a virtual firewall at the network edge without shipping hardware to each site.
A single office that only needs internet access does not need Megaport. Its value shows up when you are stitching together multiple clouds, sites or regions.
What they offer
Business Connectivity. A Port is your physical link into Megaport's network, in 1G, 10G and 100G Ethernet. A Virtual Cross Connect, or VXC, is a private point-to-point link across that network that can be provisioned in about a minute at speeds from 1Mbps to 100Gbps. Megaport Virtual Edge, MVE, adds network functions at the edge, including SD-WAN, virtual routing and a virtual firewall, so those run on Megaport's network rather than on a box you install.
Cloud and IaaS. Megaport Cloud Router, MCR, is a virtual router that links your cloud environments to each other with Layer 3 routing and BGP, with no physical equipment, so a multicloud design can be built and changed from the portal. Megaport provides private on-ramps to the major public clouds, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle and IBM Cloud.

Proof
This story comes from Megaport's own published, anonymized case study.
A dental support organization serving more than 2,800 dentists across more than 1,800 offices in 39 states. Its clinics backhauled all traffic to a single data center in Illinois, and business applications hosted in Azure timed out from high latency. Megaport deployed virtual edge infrastructure integrated with the customer's Fortinet SD-WAN, with regional hubs and core links into Azure. The case study reports latency reduced by 40 percent and steadier access to the cloud-hosted applications.
Good to know
- Megaport sells connectivity, not compute or storage. You still choose and pay the cloud providers and data centers at each end.
- The reach figures above are the company's own, stated as accurate in 2023 material, so ask for the current footprint at the specific metros you need.
- Because connections are provisioned by the minute, confirm how speed changes and short-term links are billed for the way you plan to use them.

How buying works
The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.
Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.
- 01
Build your quote list
Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.
- 02
We bring back real options
A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.
- 03
We handle the order and install
Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.
- 04
We stay on your account
Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
