MetTel is a managed communications provider that puts network, voice, mobile and security services on one contract, one bill and one portal. The services come from many carriers underneath. It serves businesses and government agencies, and describes what it sells as fully managed.

The portal is central to the pitch. Every service is ordered, tracked, ticketed and billed there, across whichever carriers sit underneath. MetTel is a useful name to know for one problem in particular: replacing analog copper phone lines, which carriers are retiring, at hundreds or thousands of sites at once.

Best for

  • Chains with hundreds or thousands of locations that want one provider and one invoice for every site, rural ones included.
  • Organizations that still run alarms, elevators and fax machines on analog lines.
  • Fleet operators that want tracking, dash cameras and mobile connectivity from one vendor.
  • Companies that want to stop buying phones and tablets and pay for them monthly instead.
  • Sites where wired internet is weak or absent, and temporary sites that need service fast.
  • Federal and civilian agencies with security requirements and large, messy telecom billing.

What they offer

Business Connectivity. POTS Transformation replaces analog lines with a small box that has eight analog ports, cellular links over more than one carrier and battery backup. Cloud Connect is a private link into the large public clouds. MetTel is also an authorized Starlink reseller for satellite broadband.

SD-WAN and SASE. Managed SD-WAN hosted in five points of presence across the United States, with automation that opens and works network incidents.

Managed Security. Firewall as a service, zero trust network access, a security service edge bundle, cloud DDoS protection and mobile threat defense.

Managed Mobility. Mobile Device as a Service covers buying, setup, support and retirement of devices. SingleSIM roams across carriers in more than 165 countries. MetFleet manages vehicle tracking and dash cameras.

Contact Center and Cloud Phone Systems. A cloud contact center delivered on Talkdesk's platform, and hosted call management with analytics for two to 10,000 users.

The catalog also lists MetTel under Managed IT. The documents available for this page do not describe that service.

Proof

  • Its SD-WAN datasheet reports that automation identifies 73 percent of network incidents and resolves 34 percent with no human involved.
  • Its SD-WAN whitepaper says its ordering, billing and support systems are designed to federal FISMA Moderate requirements, with traffic over FIPS 140-2 compliant encryption.

Its anonymized customer stories:

A large auto parts retailer with thousands of stores. Service varied from store to store, and bad weather caused frequent voice and internet outages. MetTel installed managed SD-WAN with a 4G backup link, brought broadband to remote stores that had none and replaced traditional phones with internet calling.

A ground transportation and logistics company operating in 33 states. It had nine separate mobile and device vendors and unreliable connectivity in its vehicles. MetTel replaced them with one managed service.

A civilian government agency with 10,954 billing accounts and 692 vendors. It moved its telecom billing onto MetTel's portal, which converted 7,678 paper bills to digital and consolidated 19,500 service accounts.

These figures and accounts are MetTel's own.

Good to know

  • Much of the lineup is other companies' technology under MetTel's management: the contact center is Talkdesk, mobile threat defense is Check Point, satellite service is Starlink, and the portal runs on a system called Bruin. You get one party to call. Ask which vendor sits under each service you buy.
  • MetTel's copper bulletin says that once a carrier issues a full copper retirement notice, customers have 180 days to move. If you depend on analog lines, inventory them before a notice arrives.
  • Device orders can be placed by email, portal or API, and the ordering system connects to ServiceNow and Workday.
  • The security service edge bundle is offered with a 30 day trial.
  • No document available for this page gives MetTel's headquarters, founding date or size.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
