China Telecom Americas sells network, cloud and data center services to companies in the Americas that do business in China. It is a subsidiary of China Telecom. Its documents say it was established in 2001 and is based in Herndon, Virginia.

Buyers come to it for one thing: getting data into, out of and around mainland China. Its one-page overview credits the parent company with 70 percent of China's fixed line infrastructure, so it can sell a private line from a United States office to a factory in Shenzhen, space in a data center in Shanghai, or a connection to the Chinese regions of AWS and Microsoft Azure. For a company with no team on the ground, it also sources, installs and looks after the network equipment at the Chinese site.

Best for

  • United States and Latin American companies with offices, plants or stores in China that need private connections back to headquarters.
  • Businesses entering China with no local IT staff, which need equipment delivered, installed and maintained there.
  • Companies running applications in the China regions of AWS, Azure or Alibaba Cloud that must reach them from outside.
  • Financial firms and multinationals that need high-capacity, low-delay routes between China and other markets.
  • Web and media businesses whose Chinese users need content served from inside the country.
  • Organizations that want one provider for voice across several countries.

What they offer

Business Connectivity. An MPLS private network between the Americas and China with five classes of service. International private lines, in Ethernet and leased circuit forms. Wavelength service at 10, 40 or 100 gigabits per second. Internet access and transit into China's two national backbones. The Elastic Connection Platform links branches, data centers and public clouds through software.

Cloud and IaaS. Virtual servers and object storage from its own cloud, and Cloud Connect, a private link to AWS, Microsoft Azure and other public clouds in mainland China and Asia.

Colocation. Data center space inside mainland China and in other markets, from raw space to fully managed.

Managed Security and SD-WAN and SASE. Network monitoring and equipment management under the NetCare name, security monitoring as part of its managed services, and SD-WAN delivered through technology partners such as Versa Networks.

It also runs a content delivery network with nodes inside China.

Proof

Its one-page overview lists ISO 27001, ITIL and BCI certifications. Its colocation sheet adds TL9000 and HIPAA compliance.

Its customer stories withhold the names.

A Fortune 500 retailer with 80 stores across Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China. It was moving an aging network to SD-WAN under strict service levels. China Telecom Americas handled the equipment inventory, staging and field support for hundreds of routers, switches and store systems.

A large United States retailer. It needed a stable private connection between its own data center in Shanghai and its AWS environment in Beijing. The answer combined a private network circuit, a cloud connection and monitoring.

A craft brewery opening its first office and shop in Shanghai. With no local IT team, it had its site equipped and privately connected to its United States office within 23 days of ordering.

These accounts are China Telecom Americas' own.

Good to know

  • The documents available for this page date from 2021 and earlier. Before you plan around this supplier, confirm which services it currently offers to customers in the United States.
  • Figures differ between documents: staff counts of 250 and 300, and several different data center totals, some describing the parent company's network in China. Ask which numbers describe the subsidiary.
  • Its colocation sheet argues that hosting in Hong Kong or Singapore does not avoid congestion at China's border, and recommends hosting inside the mainland for users there.
  • You can own your equipment and have it maintained, or lease it from China Telecom Americas.
  • Timelines vary by product. Wavelength service quotes an average of 45 days to provision, and the Elastic Connection Platform two weeks.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
