Verizon is a major US carrier that sells business internet, private networks, voice, security and contact center services on its own network. The company was formed in 2000, is based in New York City with operations headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and serves business customers through its Business Group.

For a buyer, the point of Verizon is that it owns what it sells. Its private network service, dedicated internet, voice and security all run on one carrier's infrastructure, with one company accountable, and its reach extends well outside the United States.

Best for

  • Organizations with many locations that want a private network between them, with traffic prioritized by type.
  • Businesses running real-time applications that cannot tolerate a shared connection.
  • Companies moving work into more than one public cloud that do not want to build and manage a separate private connection to each.
  • Remote and hybrid workforces that need business calling tied into Cisco Webex or Microsoft Teams.
  • Large enterprises and government bodies that want network, security and voice from one carrier.
  • Businesses that want their security posture measured against their peers before an incident forces the question.

What they offer

Business Connectivity. Private IP is Verizon's private network service, built on MPLS, with six classes of service for prioritizing different kinds of traffic. Verizon states it is available in more than 170 markets. Internet Dedicated is symmetrical internet access reserved for one customer.

SD-WAN and SASE. Software Defined Secure Branch combines SD-WAN routing, security functions and central management, and is built on technology from Versa. Virtual Network Services replaces single-purpose hardware with software for routing, security and optimization, and can run on your premises or in the cloud, managed by you or by Verizon.

Managed Security. DDoS Shield is a cloud service that absorbs large denial of service attacks, available in 40 countries. DNS Safeguard adds a security layer to dedicated internet and draws on the Cisco Umbrella platform. Cybersecurity Assessments evaluate your exposure and compare it with your industry.

Cloud and IaaS. Secure Cloud Interconnect gives you private connections into several cloud providers, kept off the public internet, using access that is provisioned in advance so a new cloud connection comes up faster.

Cloud Phone Systems and Contact Center. Verizon VoIP covers SIP trunking and hosted calling, with trunks that can be shared across sites. Virtual Contact Center lets customers reach you on the phone, in chat, by text, by email or through social media.

Proof

These are Verizon's own statements, and each carries the year of the document it came from.

  • It manages more than 400,000 security, network and hosting devices for over 4,000 customers (2018).
  • It counts more than 120,000 business VoIP sites and nearly 7,000 VoIP customers worldwide (2021).
  • It states a 99.99 percent uptime service level agreement for the components of Virtual Contact Center.

Good to know

  • The documents available for this page date from 2017 to 2021. Verizon's product names, packages and figures have very likely changed since. Treat this page as a map of what the company does and ask for the current portfolio.
  • Two services lean on other companies' technology: the secure branch service on Versa, and DNS Safeguard on Cisco Umbrella.
  • The contact center uptime commitment applies to named service components. Read its footnote for what is left out.
  • Some security add-ons are available only with particular connection types. Confirm the combination you want can be ordered.

How buying works

The store is the easy part. Staying on the account is the job.

Anyone can show you logos. The reason to buy here is what happens on install night, and on the ticket you open nine months later.

  1. 01

    Build your quote list

Add services and companies as you shop. No form stands between you and the shelf.

  2. 02

    We bring back real options

A person shops the bench against your addresses, then walks you through what fits and what does not.

  3. 03

We handle the order and install

Paperwork, site survey, install dates, cutover night. You get one thread, not five vendors.

  4. 04

    We stay on your account

Same team for moves, adds, tickets and the next renewal. That is the part everyone else drops.
