Zayo owns a large fiber network and sells capacity on it, from unlit fiber you light yourself to managed internet, Ethernet and cloud connections. Its mapbook counts about 13 million fiber miles over 133,000 route miles in the United States, Canada and Western Europe.

Its own bandwidth report says carriers and the largest cloud companies made more than nine tenths of its metro dark fiber purchases from 2020 to 2024. That tells you what the network was built for: moving very large amounts of data between data centers and cities. Around that core Zayo has added colocation under the zColo name, managed security, SD-WAN, and voice and cloud phone service through its Allstream brand, which serves the United States and Canada.

What they offer

Business Connectivity. Dark fiber, wavelengths, Ethernet at speeds up to 100 gigabits per second, and dedicated internet access with optional DDoS protection. Private Networks are point-to-point, ring or custom builds where the fiber and equipment serve one customer. DynamicLink is a self-service portal for turning connections up and down. Partner networks extend reach to more than 50 countries.

Cloud and IaaS. CloudLink is a private connection from your sites to more than 50 cloud providers through more than 370 on-ramps. zColo is its colocation line, and it offers cloud object storage.

SD-WAN and SASE. Managed SD-WAN running over both Zayo's private network and the public internet, with a next-generation firewall included.

Managed Security. Network-based firewall as a service, DDoS protection and encryption of private links, watched by a security operations center around the clock.

Cloud Phone Systems. Zayo UC+ is a cloud phone, video and messaging service built with RingCentral, sold in Advanced and Ultra seats. Allstream SIP trunking connects an existing phone system and pools voice lines across sites.

Proof

  • Its network reaches about 40,000 buildings, including some 1,300 data centers, and connects with more than 570 network and internet access providers.
  • Zayo's 2025 Bandwidth Report studied more than 1,800 of its own customers from 2020 to 2024. It says wavelength capacity purchased grew 2.8 times over that period, and that its wavelength network was 97 percent ready for 400 gigabit service in 2024.
  • Zayo UC+ carries a stated 99.99 percent uptime guarantee.
  • Zayo is an AWS Direct Connect partner and says it meets MEF performance standards for Ethernet.

A global retailer with about 100 branches and two data centers. Every site had been on a private MPLS network. Zayo moved branch access to SD-WAN over the internet, with a second path for availability.

A large healthcare provider. It needed several cloud connections without building its own infrastructure. Zayo paired CloudLink with its DDoS protection and its firewall service, so traffic to cloud providers is inspected inside Zayo's network.

Good to know

  • Ask whether your address is already on Zayo's network. At its Quick-Connect data centers, Zayo says 10 gigabit or smaller services can be live in about 10 days.
  • The cloud phone service is RingCentral's platform under Zayo's management and support.
  • Its two overview documents count zColo data centers differently, 44 and 45.
  • Private network projects of ten or more sites go through lab testing before installation.
  • For specialized security needs beyond its network-based tools, Zayo says it works through partner firms.
